We had been living in Wayne County only a little over two
years when we rescued our very first litter in 1999.Having to
make a trip to Nashville we considered leaving three hours
early to take in some sights on the Natchez Trace Pkwy. That
idea was short lived when we got within 2 miles from home
where we came across an 8 week old puppy running up the
road. It was obviously dropped off since it was a heavily
wooded area with no apparent residence near by. The pup
was covered from head to toe with ticks and infested with fleas.
We swooped it up brought it home and placed in an already
established kennel, we just needed to give food and fresh
water. That was easy, so again we headed out, back to the
same shortcut as before. So much for shortcuts. It took us
the three hours time we originally lotted to seeing the sights
to catch another four puppies. Then a neighbor caught our
attention asking us to take this puppy he found on the back
road, yes you guessed it. It was a litter mate to the ones we
caught. Is there a need to tell you we were late for our appointment? Unfortunately
almost every day we come across a dog suffering from severe mange, puppies dying of
parvovirus, heartworm cases galore abandonment and neglect in Wayne County.
What ultimately got us started in rescue however was what our intentions were.
We had purchased a 12 X 20 shed, put in doggie doors, added kennels to the outside,
My husband and I had spent a great deal of money purchasing the dogs we wanted to
breed. Since the building wasn't yet insulated we kept the puppies in the house. When
my neighbor asked me what we were doing. I explained that we were going to breed
our favorite breed dogs. With that said she invited me to a meeting that she and a group
of people were having. The city pound I didn't know we had, was the pressing issue.
Another idea that was short lived. No breeding for us. Instead I put my passion to a
better use.I started rescuing almost immediately and our kennel building never did get
completed. Not enough time, not enough funds, not enough permanent homes for pets
and not enough volunteers to help our cause.
