Comments from people wanting to surrender pets
caller
- I have this dog that don't like me no more, do you want to
take him?

caller- Will you take my two cats? Food has gotten so expensive I
can't  afford to buy it anymore.

caller- How much do you charge for a voucher?
CFPI-   There is no charge. We offer the voucher to help you pay your
vet for the spay/neuter procedure. The funds for this is provided by a
foundation that will only honor these vouchers issued to pet owners.

caller - I need to get rid of my pregnant dog because I can't afford
to take care of the puppies, do you want to take her?
CFP- Why didn't you take advantage of  the vouchers when we gave them to
you.? The foundation providing us the funds for these  vouchers will not
honor them if we use them on foster or shelter dogs.  We won't be able to take
in your pregnant dog unless you pay an intake fee to have her spayed

caller -Will you take my Rotweiler?  He has gotten very aggressive
with the neighbors children. They had their chihuahua out
on their  front yard and she was in heat.
CFP- I presently have no room or the funds for a big dog, I can offer you a
s/n voucher so you can have him neutered. Some  aggression
problems are easily solved that way.

Caller -I got me a dog to sleep on my front porch. Have you seen
him? He runs off every time the dog up the road goes into
heat.  He usually comes back but this time he didn't.
CFP- Same as above

Caller-I have a litter of ten puppies to get rid of. I let my dog have
just this one litter so my kids can experience the miracle of birth.
CFP- There are educational movies just for that purpose and it would
have been less costly for you and I would not have to be taking
your puppies in. Have you had the mother spayed yet? No,
why not?

Caller -I have a nine year old dog that has heart worm and I can't
afford to get her treated. Can you take her and find her a
good home?
CFP- Have you ever discussed heart worm preventions for your pet
with your veterinarian?  Oh your pet has never been to a vet until she showed
clinical signs and then you had her tested.

Caller -My Great Pyranese won't protect my goats, can I trade him
in for a small house dog?
CFP- Hmmmm. No sir, we are not a dog trading post.

Caller -Why is my cat always marking on my bed? I changed the
litter box 2 weeks ago. I want a cat that is potty box trained.
CFP- Your cat is potty box trained. You need to remember to
clean the potty box more frequently, every other day will be alright but
more frequently is better.

Caller-The barn cat I got from you died. Do you think I didn't have
enough mice for him to eat? Can I adopt another cat from you?
CFP- I informed you when you adopted him that you are required to feed
him and provide fresh water daily. They should not live on just a
staple of mice.

Caller-What do you mean there's a fee to adopt a pet? Aren't you
giving them away?
CFP-We charge for vet care so you can adopt a healthy pet.

Caller-I can't believe you won't take my dogs, that's what you get
paid for. I'm going to take this up with the city manager and
I have you fired!
CFPI- What do you mean fired. I do not work for the city. This is not the
city pound. We are a separate rescue altogether. We volunteer and run
this facility from our own property and count on donations to run it.

Caller- You said your property is almost 9 acres, what do you mean
you don't have room for another dog?
CFPI- Each of our shelter dogs are kenneled. We have no available
kennels to contain your dog.
Caller-So put up another kennel and take my damn dog!

Caller- I asked you last week if you could take my dog and you
couldn't take it then cause you needed money. Why can't you take it
now?  I put a quarter in your donation jar.
CFPI-  it costs us an average of $150.00 per dog and per cat. Do you feel
I should pay for this out of my own pocket?
Caller- Sure cuz I aint gonna pay for it. I'm takin my quarter back.

Caller-You get donations why can't you take my (4) cats? In that
case I'll just dump them at the pound!
CFP- It's due to the animal abandonment that we have no money
to take in every homeless pet.  Abandoning your cat at the pound is
illegal.

Caller-If you don't take this dog I'll have my husband shoot him.
CFPI- Unless the dog is life threatening to your livestock it is against
the law to shoot a domestic animal
Caller-I hope your happy, my husband just shot the dog!
CFPI- Were you aiming to get rid of your dog or your husband

Caller-You have to take the neighbors cats. I hate cats and they keep
coming over here. If they come back again I will just poison them.
CFP- Just to inform you, I do not have to take any pets, I do it because
they need help. If I have the donations to rescue a pet I will, and
poisoning or killing them in any manner other than taking them to the
vet to have them put to sleep is against the law.

caller-I went down to the pound and I can't believe you would ask
for a donation and allow the place to look like that.
CFP- We have rescued and taken in many dogs from the pound, vetted and
placed them, we have volunteered to help clean on many occasions, but we are
not now, nor have we ever been affiliated in any other way,  nor have we ever
been on the payroll to actively run the city pound  .

Caller-My friend met you at Piggly Wiggly to give you six
puppies and a donation. I would like to adopt one of the puppies.
CFP- I'm sorry but you may have met with the animal control officer..
Presently we have no puppies. I can assure you it was not
I that met your friend. I am the only one picking up or
accepting pets for Cause For Paws and we have not taken
puppies in for the past couple of weeks.
Caller - But she said she was with you.

Caller-I picked up 3 puppies off the side of the road LCAWL won't
take them, will you? What do you mean you want a donation.
Doesn't the county pay for their care?
CFP-We are regulated by the state to solicit and run our shelter
with donations from the residents of the county. If they do
not donate enough money to run the shelter we pay out of
pocket.  When we pay out of pocket we can't afford to take
them in.

Caller-Tell one of your employees to come and get these damn dogs
off my property. Thats what they get paid for.
CFP- We have no employees much less paid ones. We have two volunteers,
no one but my husband and me.

Caller-Why do you need a donation to get these damn dogs outta
here. They're not mine they're my neighbors dogs.
CFP- You need to respectfully ask your neighbor to come and get
them. We can not take your neighbor's dogs. If you would like
us to talk to your neighbor, we would appreciate a donation from you to pay
for our gas to drive 60 miles there and back to do that for you. Don't you
have animal control in your county? Why won't they come  get them?

Caller-  My son-in-law is in jail and left my daughter with 8 dogs, I want
you to come and gettem ?
CFP- They belong to your son-in-law and I need his permission to take
them. I called him and he said, absolutely not. I can't just go and take
other peoples dogs.
Callers daughter-But he's in jail! If you don't come get them this afternoon
I'm going to make sure people know about you!

Caller-The county should really help pay for all of this. I had a
pregnant dog once and took her too the pound. She had 6 puppies after
she got there.

Caller-Why do you ask for donations if you charge such a high
adoption fee?
CFP- The foundation providing the s/n grant won't permit us to use the
vouchers  on the shelter or foster dogs. We take our rescues to our vet and pay
the same high  price the public does. We also get them completely vetted, and
then we feed them until their adopted. Donations will also help recover the
cost for medicine and vaccines we have to buy in addition to rabies vaccs
which has to be administered by a licensed vet. We never get reimbursed for
long term residents or the animals that are so ill they need to be put to sleep.
We also do not get paid to transport to and from the vet with the animals.

Caller-I want to adopt a dog but I aint gonna fence my damn yard
for no damn dog!
CFP- Sorry, we have the right to turn down any adopters if we feel they
will not care for the dog. If you live within city limits you are
required to contain your pet within your home, a fenced yard or kennel.
This dog came from the pound and ended up there only because he was
roaming at large.

Caller-My dog got runned over by a car yesterday, I want to adopt
a dog from you. Do you have any that will stay in my yard?
CFP- Only if your yard is fenced in.

Caller-My dog and cat have the worst case of mange. If you don't
take them my kids will catch it.
CFP- When your children  get sick do you take them to the doctor?  You will
need to do the same for your pets. I can't be expected to take your sick pets,
pay the expense out of my own pocket for their vet care and risk passing it to
all our other rescues and volunteers  We presently have 25 dogs and 4 cats
and three volunteers that would be at risk of catching it.

Caller-If I take 2 small dogs from you, will you take my big dog?
CFP- No sir we are not in the market of dog trading.

Caller-You mean if I adopt a pure breed dog from you I am not
allowed to breed it? Why not?
CFP - We spay and neuter all pets we adopt out so we never end
up with any of the puppies from an accidental pregnancy.
We have to collect a Tn. spay/neuter law fee for any pets that
are in tact such as puppies and kittens too young for the procedure.
Our s/n law fee is the cost of the spay or neuter charge for the
size the dog will be when grown and you receive a voucher in
exchange. This is to insure it will be s/n and the voucher is to
pay  for the procedure before the pet reaches sexual maturity.
If the pet gets hit by a car or runs away it is not transferable to another
one of your pets
